Alternative to Bankruptcy

Debt consolidation is an alternative solution to filing bankruptcy for consumers facing excessive debts. When payments are past due on utility bills, credit cards and other loans, some debtors see bankruptcy as their only way out. Bankruptcy, however, is the last option one should consider for overdue debts. Debt consolidation is a way many choose to avoid bankruptcy.

Debt consolidation is another solution debtors should research before considering bankruptcy. The debt consolidation consultants can contact the creditors on your behalf to reduce your total debt, decrease monthly charges and remove additional mounting fees and penalties.

Creditors realize debtors are serious about restoring their credit if they are represented by a debt consolidation firm and they are more willing to work to provide better repayment terms. Generally, through contact with creditors, the interest rates are lowered, finance charges and late fees are eliminated, and additional penalties are removed. This provides the debtor with lower monthly payments but also allows more monthly funds to be applied to the principal. With more funds applied to the principal, your debts will be paid off faster.

Debt consolidation companies typically offer a plan to allow monthly payments for one loan. This works by giving your debt consolidation advisor all information needed from each of your creditors. You pay the debt consolidation company and they, in turn, distribute the funds according to the new terms.

There are many debt consolidation companies available to assist you with reorganizing your debt. Bankruptcy should be the last resort after exhausting all other possibilities.
