Review of ‘Some airlines steering clear of cash, opting for credit cards instead’

Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up, and that means holiday travel. With families so spread apart, air travel is often the way to go to reconnect over turkey and stuffing. Many of you are making holiday travel plans right now. Cramped planes, agitated passengers and employees, and the inevitable weather delays will probably be the norm the next two months. Travelers should prepare for a new change in air travel.

Some airlines, as pointed out in this recent travel column by Jane Engle on latimes.com, are considering only accepting credit cards or debit cards for purchase for food, alcoholic drinks or headsets after takeoff. The column states that JetBlue Airways will only take credit or debt cards for onboard purchases starting Nov. 1. Other airlines have a mix of policies of how people can pay, but some are leaning toward expanding the credit card purchase option.

This option offers convenience as passengers and flight attendants alike don’t have to worry about having correct change, making change or accounting for the cash in-flight purchases. For frequent travelers, exclusive credit card purchases are much easier to compile into an expense account.

However, Engle wrote that she likes to use cash for in-flight purchases because she spends less than when using credit cards. Plus, using cash limits concerns about identity theft. These are both valid points concerning many passengers.

A person with a firm grasp on credit card bills and paying off balances each month will have no problem having to whip out a card to buy something during a flight. But a traveler with credit cards close to their limits and a penchant for overspending is best off not using a credit card for such small purchases.
