Quitting Smoking Can Save Debtors Big

Smoking is just gross. I’m pretty sure most smokers agree with this statement. Look at the effects of smoking: yellow teeth, bad breath, terrible skin, black lungs, smell like a dirty ashtray, shortness of breath. I know there are more, but I can’t think of any.

Beyond the health and hygiene detriments of smoking, it also takes a monetary toll. How about a little math? I’m not sure exactly how much cigarettes cost, but let’s just say $5 per pack. If you smoke a pack a day, then you will spend approximately $1,800 per year on cigarettes alone. That’s about 150 bucks per month.

If you are in debt, this is a necessarily avoidable expense. Have you tried debt consolidation, bankruptcy or debt settlement? Have you wondered what you could be doing to speed up your debt relief program? If you are struggling to pay off credit card debt then you owe it to yourself to eliminate cigarettes from your budget.

Not only will you save in the short term by keeping your cigarette money in the bank, but you will avoid the long-term health costs of a nicotine habit.

There are plenty of ways to kick a smoking habit. There are patches, pills and gums galore to curb your cravings and steer your thoughts away from a cigarette. I have a friend who, when he decided to quit, went cold turkey. Whenever he got a craving he dropped and did 20 pushups. This provided a quick burst of serotonin, the brain’s own feel-good drug, which took his mind off a smoke.

My friend also joined an online quitter’s community. This was a website that kept track of how many days he’d gone without a smoke and gave him a place to go and chat whenever he had a craving or just needed to talk. After the first few days, his cravings subsided and he was able to better manage on his own.

In the few years he’s been without a smoke, my buddy has saved close to $6,000. That money would go far toward getting most consumers out of debt.
