Go Green And Save Money This Holiday Season

Environmental awareness does not have to take a back seat to commercialism this Christmas season. In fact, various forms of conservation can save you money and burdensome credit card bills after the new year.
Too many families seek debt relief after the holidays because they overspend on Christmas gifts. Helping the world and the environment can put a different spin on the Christmas season. It is not too late to try some of these methods.
Ditch The Elaborate Christmas Decoration
Driving through neighborhoods looking at ornate displays of Christmas lights is a holiday tradition for many families. In many neighborhoods, families often try to out-do one another as their houses are aglow in colorful lights depicting Santa Claus, reindeer and snowmen.
The power needed to run those lights just adds to your electricity bill, which is perhaps already higher than normal due to extra heating for cooler conditions. The extra juice needed to power your outdoor Christmas lights may be a nominal expense, but supplies may cost hundreds of dollars.
A better alternative may be a couple of cute wooden cutouts of Santa, highlighted by a single spotlight. Your house may not be the envy of the neighborhood, but you have a few extra bucks in your pocket for the holidays.
Plant Other Trees To Replace Your Christmas Tree
It is OK to have a live, fresh-cut Christmas tree in your home. But perhaps get some saplings and plant trees elsewhere to replace the one that was cut down adorning your living room. Trees produce oxygen, which is good for the environment. And, always take your Christmas tree to a recycling center after it has served its purpose.
Limit Gift-Wrapping
From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, Americans throw away 25 percent more trash than other times of the year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. About 4 million to 5 million tons of garbage is discarded in that time frame, according to the EPA. A lot of that trash is from gift-wrapping. Try putting your Christmas gifts in plain bags or just conceal them before the big day to cut down on excessive gift wrap and boxes. You will not have to spend extra money on gift wrap and boxes.
