Leave Credit Card At Home, Not At The Bar

“Do you have a tab at the bar?”
Many of us are asked this question while at the bar for happy hour or to watch the big football game. Usually, having a tab at the bar means handing over a credit card for the bartender to hold. While moderation is highly recommended in this situation, more often than not people’s tabs get swollen as they overindulge in their favorite beverage and their judgment becomes skewed.

Therefore, you should leave the credit card at home and pay with cash when in a bar. You can easily lose track of your spending by using a credit card to pay for drinks. At closing time, it is easy to spot the slack-jawed looks on some faces when the bill comes – followed by the usual questions.

  • “Who ordered these?”
  • “I didn’t order that.”
  • “I didn’t know those cost so much.”

You can’t really blame bar owners and employees for requiring credit cards on bar tabs. Some dishonest people guzzle their drinks and try to skip out on the bill. By holding the credit card, the establishment will be paid if someone walks the tab.

Credit card use in a bar or nightclub carries another hazardous byproduct – identity theft. Credit card receipts for bar tabs should only have the partial card number printed. But you can never be too careful. You can scribble your signature and head off into the night while the receipt sits on the bar under prying eyes. Wait staff could also accidentally give your credit card to another patron. Somebody else might then have an early Christmas at your expense.
